Representation at the top: University of Gdańsk appoints new vice rector for Cooperation and Development

The gender distribution varies between career stages at most European universities. The lack of women at the top is one of the key areas addressed by MINDtheGEPs gender equality plans. The University of Gdańsk recently appointed a new Vice Rector for Cooperation and Development, Professor Sylwia Mrozowska, bringing gender balance to the Rector’s Collegium.

Across Europe, the distribution of men and women follows a scissor shaped trend, with more women in early career stages, becoming fewer at the top. This is true also in Poland, where the University of Gdańsk (Link removed) now stands out among the Farenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk, with equal representation in the Rector’s Collegium. At the beginning of September 2022, Sylwia Mrozowska, Associate Professor in Political Science, was appointed Vice Rector for Cooperation and Development at the University of Gdańsk.

“With this change, we have increased the proportion of women in leadership positions, with two female Vice-Rectors out of four. We are pleased to see that progress has been made in this respect, especially as the University of Gdańsk stands out in this regard among the largest universities in the tri-city area forming the Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk”, says professor Ewa Łojkowska, MINDtheGEPs team leader at the University of Gdańsk.

The other universities that are members of this union include the Medical University of Gdańsk, with 2 female vice rectors out of 5, and The Gdańsk University of Technology which does not have a single woman among the 4 vice rectors. In all three universities that comprise the Fahrenheit Union of Universities in Gdańsk, the rectors are men.
