University of Gdańsk places 13th in THE gender equality ranking
MINDtheGEPs partner University of Gdańsk solidifies its leading position in Poland in the prestigious comprehensive and evolving world rankings Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. In one year, they moved up 200 positions in the gender equality ranking, from 201-300 to 13th place. This is the highest ranking of any Polish university. In an article published on their website, they attribute some of their success to EU-funded research projects MINDtheGEPs, ResBios and ACT.
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings is one of the most prestigious university rankings, and the results are strategically significant for many universities. It is the only global ranking that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For gender equality (SDG 5), they measure universities’ efforts on the study of gender equality, their policies on gender equality and their commitment to recruiting and promoting women.
The University of Gdańsk attribute their success to data collection and analysis as well as a commitment to diversity management and gender equality as part of their social responsibility as a university. And, of course, the implementation of a gender equality plan and the contributions from EU-funded projects that compile data to report on and raise awareness of the status of gender equality at the university and in society. Part of the sustainability planning includes establishing governance structures for these issues, to maintain the positive changes and discover and counteract negative trends.
In a news item on the University of Gdańsk website, rector Piotr Stepnowski describes how, thanks to the sustainable development strategy consistently implemented by the university authorities, the idea of an open and socially responsible university, as well as supporting gender equality initiatives, the University of Gdańsk not only strengthens its leading position in this area among Polish universities but also consistently improves its score in comparison to other universities on a global scale.
