New award launched to promote gender equality

The University of Gdańsk has established the Rector’s Joanna Schopenhauer Award to promote gender equality by honouring female researchers at the university. The award is aimed towards women who have attained the title of professor and whose research incorporates a gender perspective.

The award is a strategic measure to address the fact that there are fewer female professors than male ones at the University of Gdańsk, as part of their work within the MINDtheGEPs project.

“I think it is very important to draw the attention of the academic community to the inclusion of the gender dimension in research. Including a gender perspective in research serves to improve the quality of the research itself, as well as its application to the knowledge society, technology and innovation,” says Ewa Łojkowska, professor and leader of the MINDtheGEPs project at the University of Gdańsk.

The winner of this year’s first edition of the award is professor Małgorzata Lipowska. As a researcher and a practitioner within psychology and psychotherapy, she highlights the importance of researching with gender in mind. A vital but often overlooked dimension in her field.

“Most disorders are represented differently in groups of boys and girls, and research has often focused only on the group in which the disorder was more prevalent (…) Therefore, there is no area of my scientific exploration where the topic of gender is overlooked. I am pleased that my work has been recognised”, says professor Małgorzata Lipowska.
