Using gender data to tailor equality measures in science and engineering

2023-01-23

The University of Belgrade’s  School of Electrical Engineering is the oldest and the highest ranking higher education institution in Serbia in the field of electrical engineering and computer science. It was also one of the first Serbian institutions that adopted a gender equality plan. Data collected in the initial phase of MINDtheGEPs have been crucial for developing a gender equality plan that is tailored to address challenges that are specific to STEM fields in general, and particular to the organisational structure and culture.

For the University of Belgrade, the timing of MINDtheGEPs was impeccable. Serbia recently enacted new legislation on gender equality, and the European Union’s Horizon Europe research funding scheme are requesting that all beneficiaries have a gender equality plan. The data collection and analysis allowed the School of Electrical Engineering (or ETF for short) to develop tailored measures to support gender equality in time. The plan was adopted on 4 July in 2022, making ETF one of the first higher education institutions in Serbia to have a gender equality plan.

Gender equality has been in the spotlight at ETF recently, and the topic has received a lot of attention from decision-making bodies across the organisation. The news about the ETF gender equality plan, and the role that MINDtheGEPs played in the development was communicated to staff, guests from other academic and reserch institutions and the public by the Dean, Professor Dejan Gvozdic at the Day of the School of Electrical Engineering in December, putting emphasis on the fact that the gender equality plan is a significant achievement for ETF. Not only placing the school in a leading role in a modern and equal society, but also showing that the school is committed to equality as a core principle of the organisation.
