MINDtheGEPs recommendations for promoting gender-conscious teaching & learning environments
Reducing gender imbalances in academia starts in the classroom. MINDtheGEPs has developed a step-by-step checklist for teachers and decision-makers for fostering a learning environment where all students feel respected, represented and empowered. The recommendations are presented in a new policy brief on teaching with gender in mind, presenting tools for gender-conscious teaching and inclusive learning environments.
The recommendations are designed to create a more inclusive educational experience and covers content, teaching, course evaluation, and how to promote a systematic integration of gender equality in learning environments by advocating for formalisation. By following our recommendations, you can contribute to the promotion of gender-conscious teaching for a long-term effect.
Key recommendations from the brief
- Make sure your course includes a gender perspective: Evaluate your course material, identify gender inequalities and foster awareness by addressing biases.
- Teach with a gender lens: Encourage diversity, acknowledge the contributions of individuals of all genders in your field and mind your language by using inclusive and empowering words.
- Evaluate student & teacher perspectives: Always include a section about gender sensitivity in your course evaluation to create space for confirmation or feedback for improvement.
- Advocate for formalisation: Update syllabi to include gender-sensitive competences and provide teachers with proper diversity and inclusion training
